Oral Health Products

When was the last time you purchased a new toothbrush or mouthwash? Were you overwhelmed with the choices? There are so many varieties out there today that it’s difficult to know which components you really need and which are just marketing. Whatever over-the-counter dental product you buy, it is strongly advised that you ensure it has the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance.

Choosing a Toothbrush

Whatever toothbrush design you choose, the most important thing is that you use the toothbrush at least 2-3 times a day. Moreover, how long you spend brushing your teeth is as critical as how often you brush. This ensures complete plaque removal in hard to reach areas.

Our dental team highly recommends a mechanical (electric) toothbrush. The pulsations break up plaque efficiently. Many models now have timers to remind you to brush longer. When choosing a manual toothbrush, look for soft bristles.

Types of Floss

There are lots of options for floss nowadays. Single use flossers are great for a quick and easy floss. Whatever gets you to floss daily – buy that! Find a flavor you like, waxed or unwaxed. As long as you’re flossing correctly, purchase whatever suits you.

Water Picks

While there is never a suitable substitute for daily brushing and flossing, water picks are great for those with braces and highly-sensitive gums. Water picks use powerful tiny bursts of water to blast away food particles and other debris in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.

Mouth Guards

If you or your children play sports, a durable mouth guard is essential to the protection of your teeth. Mouth guards are effective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances.

There are several types of mouth protectors: stock (inexpensive, pre-formed); boil and bite (better fit to your mouth); custom-fitted (made by our team in the office, more expensive but best fit).
